Paging Dndnites
The best information I have on the Deviance and Decadence party, circa early June
Event: Decadence and Deviance Party CHANGE OF DATE
Starting: 2008-07-19, the Evening of Saturday the 19th of July 2008
Location: Dunedin, Venue TBA

Anything else I should be aware of as I plan my visit?

[livejournal.com profile] lenfant_de_jeu has expressed interest in a group dinner on Friday - I'm up for that as long as somebody else organises it :D Due to travelling inland to visit family I don't expect it to be to pushing 6:30 or later before I reach Dndn.
marsden_online: (Default)
ETA Dunedin - sometime this afternoon.
marsden_online: (Blueknight)
It seems that both the Dndn KAOS first party and the first OURS tournament of the year are on the same weekend.

I'm assuming the usual format for the latter in making my travel plans, hoping to sneak in a game or two :D

~~~
In other news, forgetting to turn on the element does not hasten dinner :(
[Baby got an Atom Bomb]
Good trip up the coast yesterday. [livejournal.com profile] trashpants safely delivered. Met her family - explains a lot :D
Prius did an even 5.0L/100km (distance 705km petrol pump to petrol pump). I wouldn't say fully loaded, because some of the boxes were fairly light.
Return trip today was done on 4.5L/100km with just me and a hitchhiker I picked up about Seddon[?]. He spent most of the trip asleep - 3am ferry crossings can do that to you I suppose.
[Moskau!]
Was tired enough to take a nap when I got home - interrupted twice by a work salesperson with questions that indicate it's going to be a long week. Pushed through the tasks already in my inbox and anticipation (anti-anticipation?) of which had already sapped my mood before I even got home.
Currently feeling kinda -blah- . The weekend was good, even with aforementioned work I shouldn't be feeling this far down :(.
Sirens are screaming and the fires are howling
Way down in the valley tonight
There's a man in the shadows with a gun in his eye
And a blade shining oh so bright
There's evil in the air and there's thunder in the sky
And a killer's on the bloodshot streets
Oh and down in the tunnel where the deadly are rising
Oh I swear I saw a young boy
Down in the gutter
He was starting to foam in the heat
Friday I drove doen to Dunedin and had a pleasant dinner with [livejournal.com profile] lenfant_de_jeu, [livejournal.com profile] salahdra and [livejournal.com profile] trashpants.
Saturday I packed [livejournal.com profile] trashpants & her life into my car and we made the trip to christchurch,
Catherine contemplates desperate measures )
Put in an appearance at the uber birthday party of doom but piked fairly early on account of tiredness, despite sugar.
Today we complete the trip to Blenheim and unload, I stay there tonight and return to Christchurch tomorrow, whereupon I have to deal with a whole pile of work crap which has come in.
marsden_online: (BlueDragon)
Wasn't as tired this trip back as last time, funnily enough.
~~~

A sunny trip south on Friday (the weather was glorious all weekend in fact). Mild traffic, got away from the worst after Timaru. Arrived in Dunedin, deposited passengers, checked into motel, acquired dinner partied.

Turnout was a little low, but the dancefloor kept happening. My leg held up well and [livejournal.com profile] trashpants didn't actually have to dance for me at any stage.

Piked about 12-30, 1am.

~~~
Breakfasted, met up with [livejournal.com profile] salahdra for a while, turned up to photograph killing round. My leg was starting to complain so after a short while I refrained from actively following the participants.
Settled in at the House of Cards for the rest of the afternoon to burn & distribute CDs of photos from the Deviance & Decadence and Chch 48. Observed board games.
Freshened up, had dinner, stuck my shiny bits to Jade.
Partied some more. Still managed to dance despite increasing protestations from leg. Piked around midnight with a taxi run. Didn't get to sleep until much later due to some LOUD drunken idiots playing rugby in George St just along from the motel (my unit was streetside).
Did I mention that my unit was laid out very like a dungeon? All it was missing was an orc and a treasure chest. [/geek]
~~~
Helped tidy and move furniture. Played a couple of games of Settlers (won the second convincingly :) ). Burnt off a CD with the public distribution fo the weekend's photos ([livejournal.com profile] xenogram currently has custody of all above mentioned CDs). Acquired an extra passenger and headed northwards about 3:30pm. Traffic was light.

Prius ticked over 50,000 kms just north of Ashburton.

Delivered passengers, arrived home, fed cat, caught up on email and LJ (of which there was less than expected).

~~~
I plan to upload photos from both 48s next weekend, individual mailouts will probably happen before then :)
~~~
Something else was planned to go here, but I forgot.

I don't recommend it. My passengers also don't need to know how many near-misses they slept through.

- Today I am sacrificing my high-paying hours (and gaming) for a "full day" meeting (starting @ 11, including dinner) for BoF. I'm not optimistic - the sum total of the agenda seems to be "everybody will get together, meet each other and talk, and everything will magically fall into place".

- Has this ever worked before? I don't think so. I intend trying to ride herd and make sure -something- is achieved. As they are painfully aware, without me they are completely sunk, not just foundering. At the very least steps towards a recovery plan if I am out of the picture might be taken.

- Still, it leaves me with a few hours free this morning to keep working through the backlog*. Also there are men under my house wedging in polystyrene blocks.

*Update LJ, refresh kitty litter tray, empty kitchen scraps, read some of a weeks backlog of rss feeds.

So, Dunedin. I arrived, it snowed. Not entirely sure what all the fuss was about , but apparently it was pretty bad in the higher suburbs. The hill roads were a little treacherous although I'm not sure what was more disconcerting - remembering how to drive sideways or learning how to drive with the anti-skid-braking kicking in.

Caught up with [livejournal.com profile] salahdra, met her mother, read some of the asp.net guide I took down with me. Went to the Come as Somebody Else party - may have been the only person not in theme. The party was small but intense and enjoyable.

As a bonus I was invited to Sunday dinner and dodgy conversation with [livejournal.com profile] xenogram, [livejournal.com profile] trashpants, [livejournal.com profile] avaiaal & flat. Lovely meal, delicious pudding, good company which due earlier (unwritten) events was something I rather needed at that point.

Traditional pre-leaving breakfast - Capers is a lot quieter on a weekday morning :D Wandered around town a bit. It was snowing again as I left, however once on the other side of the hill the rest of the trip was fine and sunny. Inside the car one could ignore the cold wind.

Totted up the $cost of the weekend when I got home - came in pretty much dead on budget including one frivilous purchase.

~~~
- The hatch to under the house is in the computer room - it's emptying cold into here. I think it's time to go and do things in other parts of the house.
Roadtrip!
Well that answers that :D My next trip to Dunedin is now scheduled for the weekend of the 23rd, all going well. I plan to make this a more leisurely visit than the past few, which have seemed to be downsaturdaybattlenapdinnerpartysleepbrunchbacksunday.
marsden_online: (Default)
So, home again and with a to-do list which will keep me going through at least Wednesday.
I've crossed off 4 of the urgent items so far today, so I'm allowing myself to pause a moment and deal with one or two non-urgent items, like updating LJ.
completely awesome.
Except for burning my tounge on a hot-chocolate. Not so good.
Back home now. Long drive.
Photos & stuff later in the week.
Going crash now.
ETA Dndn 1-2ish. Hope the weather is good. Bloody foggy up here.
The weekend actually started with a little bit of Dunedin coming to me, as Friday night [livejournal.com profile] salahdra visited on her way north.
The trip down was mostly uneventful. A detour through Geraldine for [livejournal.com profile] slothphil's cheese, lunch at Temuka, a half-hour stop while I had a fact-finding meeting with a work customer. Arrived in Dndn, delivered people to accomodation (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] quoth_ravynne and co. for the floor, [livejournal.com profile] slothphil for the airbed loan) and forced myself to take a nap in preparation for the party.
The party itself started off a little slower than I had expected but eventually built up quite nicely. [livejournal.com profile] xenogram had liberally sprinkled the playlist with songs to which I like to dance, unfortunately I wore out fairly quickly.
There was an amusing incident with an attempted gatecrasher (hereafter referred to as the "goatcrasher"). I picked up more or less where [livejournal.com profile] micheinnz left off when she was summoned to the dance floor and played door. The retreat to the gate when he challenged me to "step out on the street" with him and I, already taller and standing on the doorsill to boot, did my best loom and and asked if he wanted to take me on right there, was entertaining. I don't get to be intimidating very often.
It wasn't until Miche returned that he gave up trying to talk his way in though.
Ran a couple of carloads of people to various places, including one via a convuluted route which led to my pointing out to the navigator (who should have known this aspect of my familiarity with Dndn) "You could have just told me it was next to [x]'s place!" Finally got to bed about 3am.
Determinedly had brunch @ Capers the next morning before leaving. Had another work meetng on the way back - was asked by the client "are you related to the Xs from Y" . I get that question quite a lot, but it's not often I get to reply with "I am an X from Y!" Turns out they used to purchase rams from my grandfather. That extended the trip somewhat, and we got a trip out to see their deer (which I'm hoping [livejournal.com profile] slothphil will post photos of, as I neglected to take my camera out with me).
There followed the long, hot trip home, some post-trip phonecalls and a solid night's sleep.
Photos to follow, possibly tomorrow. A good couple of days work came out of the trip.
marsden_online: (BlueDragon)
Back in Chch. Rest of weekend was improved but not enough to salvage the trip overall. Best part was brunch this morning :)
marsden_online: (BlueDragon)
So after travelling to Dunedin in company of [livejournal.com profile] niennahirilfea on Friday, the purpose in making the weekend extended was revealed to have been invalidated. Fortunately this didn't really impact on my accomodation.
Saturday killed time until the Battle, which was very active but suffered a little from having three different groups playing slightly different games.
Cleaned up and killed time until the Deviance and Decadence party (which also had at least two other themes including being [livejournal.com profile] cthulhu_dream's birthday) and slave auction. Indulged in some retail therapy by continuing my semi-tradition of purchasing the services of Dictators. Got a real bargain :D Should have bid higher on some of the other lots I was interested in (but I really shouldn't have been affording anything).
Took photos, danced a bit. Couldn't really lift my mood enough to truely enjoy things.
After a midday breakfast Sunday returned to Chch with an extra passenger who had hitchhiked down.
~~~
I am tired and my vision is going. I don't want to go to bed yet as I've damaged my body clock enough this weekend and I have to be up in the morning to help with stage II of shifting my grandmother. I intend to stay up long enough to catch Flashbacks on C4, assuming it's screening tonight.
marsden_online: (BlueDragon)
Tuesday - updated website
Wednesday - applied for job. Friday - told job doesn't actually exist [grumble].
Thursday
- Team from the allergens trial I'm involved in came around to take air samples and vacumn the trial areas.
- Had a) cash and b) vehicle with towbar so was able to purchase and retrieve firewood. Not the best value for money, but affordable. Damp in that "been rained on, might take a week or two to dry" way. Fortunately I have about that much left in my pre-existing supply :)
- Late to gaming, gave out some loot, had fun with Darkmantles again. Called early due to excess noise around the UCSA building. Came back to my place & played Puerto Rico. Even managed to come second (and I was the only one who had played before).

~~~
My passenger count for the trip to Dunedin next weekend keeps dropping. Looking for at least one more warm body with petrol money.
~~~
WTF was that!???

~~~
So, Dunedin...
Dear freakin' ghods, what a party. Hot chicks, great music, critical mass. Amongst other things some bastard lined up the unholy trinity (Constantinople, Farewell to the Crown, Rasputin (extended)).
I may not be able to cycle tomorrow.
Took many pics, will put a selection up in my scrapbook tomorrow.
~~~
Recommend Velvet Burger as a place to get food. Gourmet burgers - I had the venison - divine...

~~~
Struck it lucky at Nexus - Slayers Guides to Ogres, Giants amd Trolls $20 net. They also have dice cheaper than the last reports I have from Comics - I picked up a new set since people seem to keep borrowing my d20s these days :D
~~~
Had a lovely couple of days of weather. Karma kicked in on the way home though - Dark, rain from the hills (as if that road wasn't bad enough @ night) to Ashburton, fog from Timaru to Asburton.

4.6L/100km :D

~~~
I must crawl towards bed now.
marsden_online: (loved)
So I'm making a trip to Dunedin this weekend :) Travelling solo in the end, perhaps I'll pick up a hitch-hiker or two for company. Planning a stop in Ashburton on the way down to visit my maternal grandparents.
Irony strikes again - I just recieved an email from K. - who I haven't heard from since Marchish.
~~~
In other news...
Impulse buying strikes again. 512Mb USB pendrive, $40

A new player is (hopefully) joining Broken Kingdoms tonight. The group really could use another body. She's apparently new to rping and looking to learn D&D - this is the closest available at the moment I think.

mmm, pizza. The supermarket was finally specialing slabs.
marsden_online: (BlueDragon)
Further to the weekend
Tee Hee Gossip.
Having a smoker as a passenger adds 30min to the trip.
Filled up just before leaving Dunedin and did the trip back at 4.6L / 100km. I <3 my car.
I may be getting fitter, but certain muscles still haven't been exercised that much in a while. As they are reminding me today.

Discovery of today
The Manchester St. parking building provides a free, undercover bicycle lockup a block from the new campus. Joy!

The new place is a little more ... cramped than the old one. I was even feeling somewhat claustrophobic, although the paint fumes may also have had something to do with that. There are however fewer stairs to deal with.
marsden_online: (Blueknight)
So at about 11pm Friday night [livejournal.com profile] copper_em and I decided we were going to be in Dunedin for the festivities Saturday night.

Saturday was a lovely day for the trip down. We ran a but late, but still caught a chunk of the games. Stopped in at Troy and Sarah's cafe in Temuka for lunch :)

The party was a blast. Great atmosphere, lots of dancing.

Caught up with [livejournal.com profile] salahdra :) and sundry other people.

Breakfasted on gourmet pancakes with Copper and Salahdra before making the drive home. Kind of feeling the effects of the outing. After a quick microwaved dinner I think I'll be in bed. (Unless I find something suitably mindless on the box).
