Quick summary
Window seats all the way up, although the first flight was offshore and there was cloud for the second. Wellington was calm but the arrival in Tauranga was somewhat bumpy. The strap on one of my bags was broken somewhere along the way [grumble]. Landed about 5pm so didn't get the chance to go into Tauranga proper as I had hoped.
Accomodated with my supervisor's Brother and sister-in-law. They have a house with a view over some hills to the sea, looking in the direction of White Island, which is visible on a clear day. It was beautifully warm, still and quiet. The food was top notch too :)
Tuesday dawned overcast and as we got closer to the farm where we would be working, wet. Very wet. Wet enough to prove a major hinderence. But we got on with what we could under cover, and it had cleared into a sunny day with wind and occasional squalls fairly quickly. The work wasn't difficult and we were finished late-afternoon.
Back to our hosts, more excellent food, sleep.
Got into Tauranga to hunt bookshops briefly. Some success. The one I really wanted to visit wasn't open, and I only had a few minutes to rush through another.
Arrived at checkin to discover we were booked for the _next_ days flights! Fortunately we had flexible tickets and were able to get on the ones we wanted. Flew over the floods on the way back, took some photos from the window. I'll put them online if they come out OK. Flight into Wellington was bumpy, so was the flight out. So was the landing at Chch. Combined with a light breakfast this left me feeling somewhat airsick, but lunch seems to have mostly remedied that.
My bag got pulled out for checking at the Wellington security point. Apparently my stapler looked like it might be something else.
Our chief flight attendant on the Wellinton-Chch leg was somewhat of a comedian. He improvised around the standard anouncements, finishing off with "Live long and Prosper" at the end of the post-landing spiel. The rest of the attendants also seemed to be in a genuinely good mood.
I'm going to deal with a few things at work then head home. It seems I have another trip tomorrow morning, fortunately we don't have to go to Blenhiem and back as it first sounded but only to Ashburton. Possibly twice, or again on Friday.
