Last week a new ISP appeared on the radar. Fyx offered flat-rate broadband and a "global mode" which would mitigate some of the geolocking preventing kiwis from viewing certain content over the internet (even if prepared to pay for it).

Not entirely surprisingly global mode has already been pulled for the meantime. Fyx has dropped their prices and offered refunds in compensation.

I was less interested in global mode than in how the pricing stacked up against the capped plans more generally on offer. Having an unexpectedly free evening I've done some spreadsheeting.

It's difficult to exactly compare like with like - every company has a slightly different take. But what I'm looking at here are phone+broadband packages with the phone cost (typically about $40) stripped out because although Fyx don't provide a phone service their baseline service does require you to have a copper landline with another provider. I may do the naked broadband comparisons in another sheet at some point. I've included TelstraClear's fibre options although it's not really an apple/apple comparison. I've charted Gb used (on the x axis) vs Cost ($ on the y axis) up to 100Gb.

Conclusions? Slingshot is generally the cheapest option followed by Fyx, although at the very top of the range (100Gb) Fyx is overtaken (undertaken?) by Snap and Telecom is closing fast. Although both those providers have steps coming up that won't cause them to lose much ground. At the slightly more expensive rates Fyx initially offered (with global mode enabled) I don't know that it would have beaten Slingshot at any point. OTOH it's not generally considered hard to beat Slingshot on service... which beings us to it being important to bear in mind that this is purely a $/Gb comparison, it doesn't take into account speed (promised or actual) or anything else.

This is of course purely academic as I'm not considering switching away from my fibre connection - almost but not quite the most expensive option.

Can you please continue the graph to 200gb.

Well since you asked nicely... I've updated the spreadsheet and the chart therein.

By 200Gb you are out the top of most of the "Home" plans and on an "unlimited" plan for those that offer them. From my dealings with the telcos they'll be happy to offer you a better deal if you are regularly going through that much data.

good analysis, but not really a totally fair comparison as you assume the cost of the home phone in the bunldes is always $40. this isn't usually the case.

For example Telecom's Total Home Lite ($85 for 30GB) comes with the Anytime home plan which costs $46 in auckland, AND a 'My Favourites' which costs $6. So strip those costs out and the broadband component is only costing $33 for 30GB. That would cost around $39 per month on quickflix.
Similar plans on Vodafone, Telstraclear, slingshot,Orcon etc mean that you are probably inflating the broadband cost of the other ISPs by $5-10. Fyx doesn't look as good under that scenario.

You also ignore Orcon Genius - which is $70 for 30GB including a phone line (albeit a form of voip).
Telstraclear, however, does do $75 for 40GB of broadband Including a copper phoneline - check their website.

Well firstly this is not meant to be an in-depth analysis, just a quick and dirty comparison based on the most easily available data. If you wish to redo the analysis using more accurate figures go right ahead - I will happily link to it.

To address your points...

>you assume the cost of the home phone in the bunldes is always $40. this isn't usually the case

Where I could easily identify the cost of the (bundled) phoneline I used this number. Otherwise yes I assumed $40 which was about the middle of that range. I nearly didn't include Telecom in the analysis at all their website gave me so much trouble.

> You also ignore Orcon Genius - which is $70 for 30GB including a phone line (albeit a form of voip).

I deliberately didn't include Genius -because- all the other plans were including a copper line - even the TelstraClear Cable package I am on.

> Telstraclear, however, does do $75 for 40GB of broadband Including a copper phoneline - check their website.

Funnily enough I -started- at the TelstraClear website. You are talking about their basic Homeplan (http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/homeplan/packages/broadband.cfm). If you take a close look at that page you will notice that the $75 basic Phone+Broadband connection includes no data whatsoever - usage packs must be purchased separately as per the second section of the page.

This is included in the spreadsheet and on the graph as "TC Homeplan"
