"We tend to assume that kids (and adults) know how to achieve success. If they don't get there, it's for lack of effort — or talent. Sometimes that's true. But a lot of the time, people are just flying blind."
This really resonated with me. People ask 'what do you want to do?' I don't know, for various reasons, including not knowing where the next step is.
I also note this in the exercise scripts I mark for first year maths. Some people don't know what they are doing and probably don't know the right questions to ask to get the info they need. They don't know what they need to do to learn or how to learn it.
