Broken Kingdoms ran late last night, having the rather anti-climactic 'boss battle'. Big bad failed a whole bunch of saves and was essentially taken out in the first round. His second incarnation (as his dead body was posessed by his demonic patron) didn't fare much better, as the PCs started making saves.

His minions did give the PCs a 'run' for their money, but we'd had that particular fight practically twice already. Note - Imps and Quasits are horribly under-CRed for what they can do.

A couple of my players have attention issues. Notably and variously, assuming that if I'm talking to the room in general I'm not taking to them (results in my repeating myself), likewise assuming if I'm talking to someone else directly it doesn't apply to them (results in my having to repeat details about what the other PCs have just done (repeatedly), or asking the same question, not paying attention to or immediately forgetting the answer, then immediately asking again (I believe the record last night was set at three times in the space of about a minute). And of course there's the age old 'not starting to think about what my next action will be until the start of my turn so everybody has to wait while I go through all my spells and equipment and ask what's going on'.

I really don't like repeating myself that much! It's impossible to run a fast-paced and dramatic battle under these conditions. I'll claim my share of fault for interruptions too - I'm often nowhere near as prepared as I should be and have to spend time looking up the effects of spells and abilities. At one stage last night I had four books open on my lap although I don't think I was looking through more than two of them at any one time.

Next week we will tie up some loose ends and then the campaign may conclude or just go on hiatus for the duration of exams. [livejournal.com profile] uaekiwi is leaving us for other shores and I'll be sad to lose him as a player. He has been driving a lot of the action and I expect the group dynamic to change dramatically without him.

Then I arrived home at about half-past-midnight to discover a panicked email from my 'boss' about not-working-properly websites. I spent some time looking them over, but the problem seemed to have resolved, at least from my machine. So I got to sleep sometime after two and didn't sleep particularly well until half-eight. Shower, breakfast and sunshine hasn't improved my outlook on the day any. There's a work meet'n'discuss with a bunch that I haven't met yet this afternoon - I hope I'm able to make a better impression by then.

I have to claim a big chunk of the fault for the disruption last night. I'm really sorry. It is so easy to get distracted, especially when there's other conversations going on. I always have such a good time gaming :) so I feel bad that I contributed to it being less than fun for you. Heh, I arrive every week with the thought that I won't ask stupid questions, but best laid plans and all... :)

Hope the meetiing with the new folks goes well.

Other conversations distract me as well. You're only to blame for being distracted by those if you start them/take part :D

I don't mind stupid questions, I mind having to repeat the answers multiple times, be it to the same or different people.

ok :) I'll definately be doing my best to stay focused next week. I'm really looking forward to it, but it will be sad to see the end.

Yes, I also apologise for my part in the general lack of focus. Hope your day's picked up a bit...

I second that about the Imps! I was planning to put a couple of Imps into my tuesday campaign, but they're definitely stronger than CR 2.

Indeed, they're one of those critters that, under the direction of a DM who really knows what he's doing (and Robert certainly did), can be bloody dangerous to a party that doesn't have its act together. We were certainly handicapped by our one supposed kick-butt fighter, who seemed to think it was more important to be pulling weasels out of his ass bag of tricks than to actually fight, but the imps were always going to be tougher to dispatch than the lone spellcaster, who tend to be vulnerable when isolated (Morag and I can attest to that), and once we started ganging up on him with area-effect spells, he was always going to fail a save or two. We certainly got lucky with some rolls, but I think the odds were fairly stacked against him in any case.

What really did him in so quickly was failing the Daze save (twice). That also changed the Imps' (Quasits actually, the green ones) tactics, without Maddagorian giving them better directions they just attacked the nearest opponent for the most part.

The major down side was that with only the Imps attacking (or the Imps only attacking) there was a lot less HP (quickly recoverable) damage coming at the party and a lot more DEX damage. Poor Morag.

Mind you, their Fear effects were unexpectedly effective, unfortunately people were taking so long to cycle through actions that it really did take players away from the action for too long (Note: when an effect says "Panicked for x rounds", and there isn't some limit on how far characters can run, allow 2x rounds before they're back in the action. What I should have done was randomly determined an axial corridor for each PC to be near at the end of the effect and then one or two rounds to get back. You were running in circles after all.)

If I'd been using the full range of abilities you guys would have been toast, so it's lucky I forgot about those for the first real battle you had with those critters :D

We were running in circles?? *amused*

Ah, two d's in Maddagorian *goes away to edit*

The spellcaster works best when he can blast the party from far away while the lackeys keep the characters from getting him/her. I must remember this for my campaign, where the main bad guy will be very effective if he can keep the party bogged down :)
That's if I ever get around to bringing him in, of course; conditions aren't quite right at the moment.

Regardless of how we finished up, I want to say a huge thank you for a most enjoyable campaign. You had a well thought-out plot and well-run scenarios. It does seem a pity that we have to wind it up, but real life does have to take priority sometimes. And I will keep Zorfal around, on the off-chance that his services are required again some day. Remind me to update you with all his details - it occurs to me that he might make an useful NPC for a future campaign...

[Blushes] Thanks. If the campaign continues I expect Zorful will still be hanging around the edges as a useful NPC :)

Hear hear, it has been great fun :D and thank you for being such a great party member, it's been fun
