So, first real Broken Kingdoms session last night. Two of the players turned up over an hour late, just as I was about to start a slightly toned down version of the scenario for the other two who had taken the opportunity to finish up thier characters. However things ran pretty well - fairly constant action once we got started and the players all seemed to enjoy themselves.
I was railroading a bit - narrated over their gaining employment, who they were working for and into the opening scene. (If your PCs could stuff up the employment negotiations and render your adventure moot - don't let them actually play it out. Works for first scenarios but I won't use that trick later in the game). So the guy they were protecting found his maguffin in the ruins and then the PCs spotted/heard the distraction and rushed off into combat. Admittedly the combat was started by the mind-witch taking a pot-shot from the window before any of the others had a chance to open negotiations.
Scenario bad guy showed up back at the maguffin and demanded it be handed over - the effect of his appearance and speech was ruined somewhat by the witch scoring a full-damage hit with a mudball. NPC 1 fled with maguffin, BG followed, manged to beat on NPC1 and take mg. The other three PCs still mopping up the combat outside were blissfully oblivious.
BG fled through the house and fell through the kitchen floor as it collapsed (someone was probably going to, I just didn't know who). The rogue had seen him pass through the entranceway and followed, but tok a hit and didn't manage to strike BG before he ran through a hole in the basement wall and into the sewers. The rogue and mind-witch followed but BG escaped into the darkness and faced with multiple ways he could have gone they elected not to try and follow further.
The totem warrior and the mage-blade were running around the outside of the house to block the back door, and didn;t get back to the reat of the party until later. NPC1 was not pleased, and even less so when the ttem warrior tried to negotiate for an additional reward if the PCs retreived the mg (net "1" on diplomacy check). Fortunately two of the other PCs managed to calm him down and he grudgingly agreed to something extra.
The one prisoner from the distraction fight was woken up but wasn't able to provide much in the way of information. He was eventually set free and sent running.
Eventually the PCs descended into the sewers and the totem warrior was able to pick up the trail. Having light (which the BG didn't) they were able to make good time. Arriving at a juncture in the sewers which contained a pool covered by phosphorescent fungus, the totm warrior heard the something disturb someof the rats which they had been hearing at a distance and quickly led the way in that direction. The rats seemed to be coming closer so the PCs hid along the walls but failed thier listen checks and BG had run back past them before they had time to react - followed by a swarm of rats several of which paused to take bites out of the PCs.
Ignoring the rats the totem warrior pursued and struck down the BG, and the nearly dead PCs then retreated to a safe distance while the swarm poured over his body. Spotting that he wasn't carrying anything that could have been the mg they decided to investigate the rat lair while the rats were occupied. Some minutes of searching turned up a variety of other potentially valuable items and eventually the mg - at which point the unmistakable sound of the rats returning to thier lair could be heard.
