I've been cleaning out an old email archive.
Rainbow – The Dragon Faery
The shortened version of his name translated to “Rainbow” in the humans tounge, “Hatched from the shell of rainbow hues laid in the Hive of Malkern on the night of many fires” causes confusion to some, as his colouration is a mix of light and medium blues, occasionally tinged with a rosy pink or watery green. Physically indistinguishable from the others of his race to the untrained eye, Rainbow possesses both strength of body and dedication to purpose that many of his kin lack, features that during his life of 8 years (as humans measure time, this is a good third of his expected lifespan) in the service of King Malkern (one of only two known awoken Imperial Dragons on the world of Halcyon) have placed him in a position as one of the king's aides, from where he has just recently been entrusted with accompanying a recently formed group of members of other races on vital missions from the King.
In this group, Rainbow’s function is to represent King Malkern as ambassador and diplomat in any official (or unofficial) discussions or non-hostile encounters. This purpose is handicapped slightly by the dragon faery’s inability to pronounce the speech of many of the races on Halcyon (although his understanding is excellent), causing him to rely far too heavily on translators within the group to relay his comments. Despite showing much potential in the realms of earthy magicks, it appears as though he will not gain the ability to use the gift of tounges for some time yet.
By nature more serious than many dragon faeries, Rainbow nevertheless retains their sense of friendly playfulness and fun, and attraction to objects of beauty and value, except when these would hinder the task at hand, when he can become remarkably focused, even single-minded. These unusual features however, never last longer than the task requires. His birth-totem is the snake, which makes him “secretive, mysterious and adaptable”, of which the last trait is the most prominent to the casual observer. He also shows every sign of enjoying the attention his position earns him within dragon faery society, and elsewhere.
Perhaps the most negative personality trait Rainbow displays is his racial dislike for Imps, whom he, like most dragon faeries, regards as malicious mischief-makers and thieves. This dislike is expressed in ways varying from constant suspicion of imps within the party he is travelling with to active participation in and enjoyment of “dealing with” (usually in a non-debilitating fashion) any imps which encounter and inconvenience the group.
Still one of my favorite past characters.
Thursday AD&D - Oravalen's drinking song
Four merry men in a ship are we,
Sailing away on the deep blue sea.
One a whistler, one a seeker, one a drunkard and me. ["me" sung very long]
Drunkard fell overboard, and we were three. [we: then there]
Three merry men in a boat are we,
Sailing away on the deep green sea.
One a whistler, one a seeker, and me.
Whistler fell over, sunk into the sea. [Whistler blew overboard, spoken line]
Two merry men in a barrel are we,
Floating awy on the deep wet sea.[away]
One a seeker and me.
Seeker fell in, and there was just me. [Seeker sought overboard, spoken line]
[slow]
One merry men in the deep deep sea, [man]
One wet fool, poor sloshed me. [shloshed (yes, it matters)]
Additional notes (26/10/99): this song is often started by a group of people, and traditionally has as many characters (plus 1 - me)(hence verses) as those present, each person shouting out one character to start with (everyone joins in for the "and me"), and calling out how they fall overboard at some stage (it's polite to do this before you pass out), after which they join in calling the other characters for subsequent verses (if conscious). Traditionally, each verse has the characters in a different vessel doing something different on a different deep sea. One should drink at the end of each verse, at the end of each spoken line, and any other time one wants to, dammit! (usually while other people are calling their characters). An extra large draught (tankard draining, like), is taken at the end of the song.
Written by me for my alcoholic mage.
