So I think in my future D&D games I'm going to deal with the situation where someone/s with missile weapons have the drop on a high hit-point party with a house rule whereby the readied shots do CON damage (if they hit) instead of plain old HP damage. That should make them think twice about just charging in while retaining the "not actually lethal unless you are seriously outnumbered" vibe.
This will also make the lone-sniper-in-the-dark opponent really terrifying instead of someone who can at best nickel-and-dime a high level party.
Of course the PCs can use the same rule to their advantage if they are the archers. But CON damage can actually be less threatening to low-HD opponents - the resulting HP loss will actually be halved for a 1HD critter compared to just doing the damage normally. (This might also make it a useful tactical option for -not- killing weaker opponents.)
