Amazing how the whole house could be silent & respectful for the unscheduled motions about Haiti & the death of a RNZAF pilot, but wouldn't give the PM & other leaders the same modicum of respect while they gave their formal speeches. Please can we have some more adult politicians?
It's still going (up to Peter Dunne) but most of the House has left - in fact most of the House had left when Russell Norman was speaking for the Greens. I gave up when that obnoxious little Rodney Hide came on and every second phrase out of his mouth was trying to claim credit for Act.
Sooo, my call is that National is keeping in increase in GST in as a bogeyman to keep attention off the other stuff. I reckon the could get away with increasing it actually, if they dropped income tax significantly more at the bottom end than they do at the top ('across all tax brackets' at the start of the speech was, frankly, the main glimmer of hope in the whole thing). Seems unlikely though.
Other than that, well it's all very punitive frankly. Positively Dictatorial. And we're probably just going to take it, just like we would no matter the colour of government. NZ has become a nation of sheep, and voted wolves in charge.
