When you're second on the scene at a motorway accident you stop, turn on the hazard lights and give what assistance you can. Tonight that was calling the ambulance (111), supplying a torch and talking to one of the drivers.

Picture this (those who know Chch) - the Southern Motorway, a few hundred metres from the 'Y' towards Brougham St. One car, front end munted (walking back past it later I saw they had cut the driver out and had him on a stretcher). Tracks lead off through the grass verge back towards the 'Y' in an erratic curve for about 100 metres before crossing the motorway and stopping at car #2 who has T-dived into the ditch. Car #2 (a taxi) has a munted driver's side door and a very lucky driver who has taken a nasty bang on the head but otherwise seems OK (he was able to climb out the passengers side and walk to the ambulance when it arrived). Fortunately no passengers. This is where I spent about half-hour waiting for the emergency services (all three turned up eventually).

I don't know whether I'm glad to have been at the less-messy part of the accident or wondering if I would have been more help at the other (where my car was).

A notable, if not happy end to a very blah day which I originally (foolishly) had high hopes of enjoying.
